Appalachian Carbon Partnership Marketing Specialist 


Position: Six Month (Part-time) Contract Position. 24-32 hours per week

Location: Kuhre Center for Rural Renewal, Trimble, OH

Start Date: June 15th, 2011 (or sooner)

End Date: December 31st, 2011

Reporting: Communications Director on strategy and planning; daily implementation reporting to Sustainable Forestry Administrator


In 2009, Rural Action joined the Appalachian Carbon Partnership (ACP), a voluntary managed forest carbon offset program that seeks to provide woodland owners in rural Appalachian Ohio an opportunity to earn additional income from their woodlands through sustainable forest management and by sequestering carbon dioxide from the environment into their forests. Our outreach strategy was recently updated to include the marketing and sale of carbon offsets to small businesses, foundations, and individuals in Ohio. Rural Action is seeking to fill a contract position through the end of 2011 with the possibility of extension. 

The Appalachian Carbon Partnership Marketing Specialist will work with the Forestry team, Communications Director, and regional ACP partners to develop a marketing strategy for the sale of carbon offsets in Ohio. The ACP is a forest carbon offset program geared towards conservation of privately managed forest in Central Appalachia. The ACP Marketing Specialist will develop and implement marketing and promotional strategies, will work as a team member to coordinate communications, will train staff on marketing the ACP at events, and will provide excellent routine customer service to clients. The Marketing Specialist will also be responsible for statistical reporting to funders and partners and will work with the Rural Action Forestry team on fund development to ensure a successful program in Appalachian Ohio.



• Development of marketing plan for the Appalachian Carbon Partnership (ACP) building off of existing 

work plan and program sales targets;

• Implement the marketing plan for the ACP in Appalachian Ohio counties and adjacent urban markets;

• Develop a network of contacts and collaborative partnerships in Ohio and the Central Appalachian 

region to facilitate program efficiency and effectiveness;

• Work with the forestry team and ACP Program Administrator to identify and develop new marketing 

products, new target markets, and expand product, service, or other opportunities in accordance with 

the Appalachian Carbon Partnership;

• Attend meetings and make presentations on Rural Action’s behalf to build reputation, provide program 

Information, and generate inquiries in the region;

• Coordinate outreach and educational events on behalf of the Appalachian Carbon Partnership;

• Maintain the ACP marketing work plan and calendar;

• Maintain a strong working relationship with ACP marketing management team in Kentucky.

• Cultivate relationships by providing exemplary customer service to all marketing clients – timely, accurate, 

and friendly;

• Follow up and follow through with interested clients;

• Provide program updates to clients;

• Maintain detailed records of customer interactions and transactions, recording details of inquiries, 

complaints, and comments, as well as actions taken in our customer database


• Participate in and report on progress at staff and partner meetings as requested;

• Complete monthly report cataloging successes and failures;

• Provide updates on progress for grant reporting to partners/funders;

• Perform other related administrative tasks as requested.


Four year college degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, Environmental Science or an equivalent field or an equivalent combination of formal education and relevant experience; 

• Sales and/or marketing experience

• Goal oriented

• Experience organizing public events and communications/marketing plans;

• Outgoing, well-organized, attentive to detail, creative and able to work successfully on a 

team of diverse members;

• Ability to develop successful relationships with clients;

• Excellent communications skills, written and verbal;

• Detail oriented, consistent follow-through with minimal supervision; 

• Valid driver license;

• Must provide own transportation and be able to travel up to 75% of the time; 

• Ability to work nights or weekends as required;

• Basic spreadsheet and database skills;

• Ability to carry 10 lbs. of weight.


• Experience with donor development and cultivation;

• Experience working in Southeastern Ohio, and/or knowledge of area businesses and 


• Understanding of and a strong interest in the Appalachian region; 

• A commitment to sustainable development and building healthy communities and strong local 


• Experience delivering presentations to diverse audiences;

• An understanding of forest economics and carbon sequestration;

• Experience doing internet based research;

• An interest and commitment to sustainable forestry.

• Ability to operate audio visual equipment (e.g., Laptop computer, projector, DVD player, etc.)
