a complex task in a challenging commercial environment. We work at every stage of the supply chain, 
from production and processing, through to purchasing and investment. Our ten years’ experience 
covers the management of forests, oil palm, soy, sugarcane, rubber, beef, cotton and jatropha, at a 
range of scales that includes smallholders, communities and forest-dependent people through to 
multinational businesses. We focus on the opportunities for conservation and social benefits within the 
production landscape, and never lose sight of the need for pragmatic and workable practices.
 
Position summary
The position is an exciting opportunity to take a senior role in the management and delivery of a core 
service area within Proforest’s consultancy services, and respond to the rapidly growing demand for 
Proforest’s services in the area of sustainable agricultural commodities. . Based in Oxford, UK the post 
will involve business development and coordination of the agricultural commodities service area, and managing and/or participating in a range of projects; particularly in relation to sourcing, supply-chain 
management and investment. This includes providing clients with policy advice, research, training, 
audits and other services, tailored to their needs.  Recent clients include Greenergy, Shell, HSBC, IFC, 
Carrefour and Olam. The post will involve international travel.
 
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership for the development of the Agricultural Commodities service area, including taking a leading role in setting aims and objectives, planning, business development, delivery and measurement/monitoring of progress against objectives.
  • Manage and deliver projects for clients. This includes proposal writing, project inception, budgeting and reporting.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of the current policy and strategic factors relating to the sustainable management and sourcing of agricultural commodities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key actors such as sustainability initiatives, support agencies, and other stakeholders who have an interest in the sustainable management and sourcing of agricultural commodities. 
  • Occasional work as required on other related projects.
  • Contribute significantly to the broader functioning of the Proforest team, including participation in management processes and support for the planning and delivery of other services.
Qualifications, Experience, Qualities
Essential Qualifications, Experience, Skills:
  • Tertiary level (masters or equivalent) qualification in a relevant discipline (eg. agriculture, natural resources, social sciences, economics,)
  • A clear understanding of environmental and social sustainability issues affecting the agricultural commodities sector
  • Understanding of the development and implementation private sector purchasing policies and government procurement policies for agricultural products.
  • Experience of working in , or closely with international agricultural supply chains 
  • At minimum 5 years relevant international work experience 
  • Strong leadership and project management skills (including excellent time-management, problemsolving and organisational abilities)
  • Highly developed interpersonal and team working skills, as well as proven ability to operate in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
Highly desirable:
  • Practical experience of working in agricultural commodities production (preferably in developing countries)
  • Experience of budgeting, planning and team management
  • Fluency in a second language (particularly Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Chinese)
  • Experience and/or knowledge related to sustainability standards, auditing, and certification, in the context of natural resource management (forestry, agriculture, fisheries, REDD+)
Salary:  GBP 30,000 – 40,000 commensurate with experience

Proforest is seeking an experienced, motivated individual to manage its programme of Support to 
Sustainability Initiatives.

departments, non-governmental and civil society organizations to achieve the sustainable use of the

policy and legislation to practical operations on the ground – to support the development and 
implementation of workable environmental and social standards and safeguards.
 
Sustainability Initiatives Support Programme
One of the most successful recent approaches to promoting sustainable use of natural resources has 
been the development and use of standards, safeguards and certification schemes which help to 
define sustainable production and provide a mechanism to link this to sustainable purchasing and 
investment. Proforest has played a leading role in helping emerging initiatives to develop their 
standards and systems and has recently formalised this un paralleled expertise into a dedicated 
support unit. 
 
The programme is run within the Proforest Initiative (PFI), a charitable organization established by 
Proforest in 2010. It provides practical support to initiatives at every stage of their development 
from initial set-up advice to facilitation of standard-setting processes and ongoing training of new 
staff and board members in established schemes. The programme also forms partnerships with
roundtables, standards-setters and certification systems to improve the consistency, quality and 
impact of their work, including building bridges between schemes, supporting mutual recognition 
and sharing of best practices.

Position summary

Managing the Sustainability Initiatives Support Programme is an exciting opportunity to take a 
leadership role in the development and delivery of a growing area within the Proforest Initiative.   
Based in Oxford, UK the post will involve providing leadership for the programme and managing 
and/or participating in a range of projects, to help international sustainability schemes and 
safeguard systems to implement best practices and meet their own sustainability goals.  Recent 
partners or clients include Rainforest Alliance, the REDD+ Social and Environmental Standards 
Initiative, Roundtable for Responsible Soy (RTRS), Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), 
Bonsucro (Better Sugarcane Initiative), Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), Cotton made in Africa (CmiA), 
Roundtable for Sustainable Biofuels (RSB), Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), and the ISEAL 
Alliance.   The post is likely to involve international travel. 
 
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership for the Sustainability Initiatives Support Programme; including setting aims and objectives, planning, business development, delivery and measurement/monitoring of progress against objectives.
  • Manage projects with partners such as roundtables, standards-setters and certification systems to improve the consistency, quality and impact of their work. This includes proposal writing, project inception, budgeting, delivery and reporting.
  • Build, maintain and manage relationships with key sustainability initiatives, support agencies, donors and stakeholders who have an interest in the successful and credible implementation of sustainability standards and schemes. 
  • Contribute to fundraising work for the Proforest Initiative particularly as it relates to the 
  • Sustainability Initiative Support Programme
  • Occasional work on other Proforest Initiative and Proforest projects especially in relation to sustainability standards and certification schemes.
Qualifications, Experience, Qualities
Essential Qualifications, Experience, Skills:
  • Tertiary level (masters or equivalent) qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. natural resources, social sciences, business, communications, management systems)
  • Experience in working with standards international setting processes and/or certification schemes.
  • Knowledge of international standards/safeguards auditing, certification, accreditation, scheme 
  • governance in the context of natural resource management (forestry, agriculture, fisheries, REDD+)
  • Experience with multi-stakeholder processes (such as consultation, policy negotiation, standards-setting, governance)
  • An understanding of international environmental and social sustainability issues A minimum of 5 years relevant work experience 
  • Strong leadership and project management skills (including excellent time-management, problem-solving and organizational abilities)
  • Highly developed interpersonal and team working skills, as well as proven ability to operate in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills 
Highly desirable:
  • Experience of facilitating meetings and negotiations
  • Experience of delivering training courses 
  • Fundraising experience, engagement with philanthropic donors, multi-lateral funders.
  • Experience of budgeting, planning and team management
  • Fluency in a second language (particularly Spanish, Portuguese or French)
  • Experience of working internationally in work related to natural resource management, conservation, environmental management and/or indigenous peoples, land rights and labour rights issues.

projects within Proforest’s consultancy services, in both the forest products and agricultural 
commodities sectors.  Proforest have been leaders in the field of responsible purchasing and supply 
chains for ten years, and we are looking to appoint a project manager to join our team and contribute 
to our continued growth in this area. Based in Oxford, UK the post will involve participating in a range of projects.  
Recent clients include Defra, Tetra Pak, Shell, John Lewis, and Greenergy.   The post may involve international
travel .
 
Responsibilities
  • Manage and deliver supply chain projects for clients. This includes proposal writing, project inception, budgeting, technical work and reporting.
  • Contribute to the development of the relevant Proforest consultancy service areas, including in some cases involvement in activities such as planning, business development and monitoring of progress against objectives.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of the current policy and strategic factors relating to the responsible sourcing of forest products and agricultural commodities.
  • Occasional work as required on other related projects especially in relation to sustainability standards and certification schemes.
  • Contribute to the broader functioning of the Proforest team, including participation in support for the planning and delivery of other services.

  • Tertiary level (masters or equivalent) qualification in a relevant discipline (natural resources, social sciences, business, communications, systems)
  • A clear understanding of environmental and social sustainability issues affecting the forest products and agricultural commodities sectors
  • Detailed understanding of international agricultural supply chains, including supply routes and how products and commodities are traded 
  • At minimum 3 years relevant work experience 
  • Project management skills (including excellent time-management, problem-solving and organisational abilities)
  • Highly developed interpersonal and team working skills, as well as proven ability to operate in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills 
Highly desirable:
  • Fluency in a second language (particularly Spanish, Portuguese or French)
  • Experience and/or knowledge related to sustainability standards, auditing, and certification, in the context of natural resource management (forestry, agriculture, fisheries, REDD+)
  • Experience related to working in forest management and/or agricultural commodity production systems
Salary:  GBP 25,000 – 30,000 commensurate with experience
