Without sufficient and effectively invested funding from traditional (eg bilateral funding) and innovative (eg private sector) sources, we will fail to fully address the current risks to our natural environment. Engaging in the ongoing international climate and biodiversity finance dialogues by encouraging financing on a large scale and the effective investment of those funds by advising on the modalities, mechanisms, priorities and access of new innovative sources of funding is a critical component to advancing CI’s policy goals.
The Sr. Manager for Climate and Biodiversity Finance Policy will work as part of the International Policy team and will be responsible for leading cross-institutional dialogue to develop and implement CI strategy to achieve climate and biodiversity financing policy outcomes. S/he will track all relevant financing negotiations, new and emerging financial mechanisms and funds to inform strategy, and convey relevant information back to CI staff engaged in these issues. The Sr. Manager will also be charged with developing partnerships and coalitions with like-minded organizations to develop and promote joint policy positions, provide policy advice to decision makers and support and collaborate with CI Field Programs to engage their governments on financing issues through the production of high-level policy briefs, presentations, tools and engagement in relevant on-the-ground initiatives. In addition, the Sr. Manager will lead the Biodiversity Policy team, which is responsible for developing CI’s institutional strategy, priorities and positions on the CBD, IPBES and related international fora.Ã‚Â S/he will support regional and national programs in engaging their governments to influence these forums and achieve policy objectives.
- Lead cross-institutional teams to develop CI positions and input to international dialogues on climate and biodiversity financing including, but not limited to, the types of financial mechanisms that can be deployed to achieve Biodiversity and Climate financing goals, the safeguards, criteria for receiving funding, and monitoring of financial flows.
- Specifically lead development of CI position on the use of innovative, private sector, market and non-market mechanisms to finance climate and biodiversity goals, including necessary safeguards, relationship with public funding and how they can be usefully scaled up.
- Influence programming of funds to ensure that, for example, Ã‚Â Green Climate Fund thematic windows include REDD+, mitigation, ecosystem based adaptation and capacity building.

- Frequent travel to international meetings representing 30% of the work time and work through a geographically disbursed team.
- Master’s degree in conservation science, climate, international policy or finance, or development-related field, or bachelor’s degree and at least five years of specialized professional experience in topics related to international financing for climate change and biodiversity and associated forums.
- Working knowledge of financing mechanisms and current debates around different types of mechanisms for biodiversity and climate financing.
- Proven knowledge of current negotiations under major biodiversity policy for an existing network of contacts.
- Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills
- Proven ability to form collaborative working relationships with multiple groups internal and external to the organization.
- Comfortable working across cultures.
- Experience in professionally and diplomatically interacting with government delegates and other high-level partners.
- Ability to understand complex, technical issues concerning conservation science, international development policy, and the politics surrounding multilateral institutions that are critical to CI’s success
- Highly independent worker able to assess a situation, make the necessary decisions and execute them for multiple lines of work and deadlines.
- Ability to coordinate and work effectively as a member of a team.
- Ability to facilitate group meetings in person and remotely.
- Fluency in written and spoken English.
- Fluency in Spanish, French or Portuguese.
- Established relationships in the climate change and/or biodiversity policy community
- Professional or academic experience in international policy analysis and design, and knowledge and understanding of complex multilateral institutions.
