The War Room fulfills a critical strategic role in monitoring all areas affecting climate change and identifying areas that need resources and implementation support. There is both an Operations arm of the Carbon War Room, focused on implementation, and an Intelligence arm, focused on strategic information gathering, monitoring and modeling. Position Responsibilities:

The Senior Operations Specialist for the Carbon War Room will lead and plan active operations in defined ‘Theaters’ of activity. This will ensure that they maximize the positive impact on the environment and the return on investment for CWR Founders and Sponsors.

Planning of Operations – Scoping and Strategic Approach

  • Working with CWR research team, NGOs, scientists, entrepreneurs and others to identify the key current players and the strategic gaps within selected Theaters;
  • Ensure the selected Operations are presentable to funders and CWR Board, with content and format to an appropriate standard;
  • To identify the key points of leverage in the war on climate change;

Execution of Operations – Project Management Direction and Assistance

  • To drive the Operations staff to originate and implement the winning strategy to maximize the flow of capital to low-carbon solutions;
  • To present the scoped Operations to the Founders and other potential Funders;
  • To assure quality execution of the Operations – monitoring progress and resources used as appropriate;
  • To maintain a watching brief on all relevant active operations;
  • To monitor progress of selected active operations against deliverables, timelines and budgets – offering strategic guidance and possible corrective actions as appropriate;
  • To hold each active operation to account and in turn take internal responsibility for its delivery;
  • To ensure that the most appropriate status reporting is prepared in an insightful, accurate and timely manner;
  • To provide specialized assistance to all active operations as per the background of the senior manager concerned, e.g. financial structuring, strategy, conflict resolution, convening etc;
  • To maintain strong working relationships with the Operations team and other teams in the CWR;

Execution of Operations – Resources (People and Partnerships)

  • To hire and manage a network of staff and volunteers as most appropriate for each operation;
  • To build constructive relationships will all relevant NGOs, companies etc as appropriate to act as Implementation Partners;
  • To consult and foster relationships with the informal ‘Board’ and generate suitable ‘asks’ for the Funder liaison team;

Governance of Operations

  • To support the overall process of management and corporate decision-making to ensure we define, codify and implement good process to maintain good corporate governance overall;


  • Professional experience in the philanthropic or related for-profit field – including corporate or banking development area or consulting organizations;
  • Experienced as a generalist in financial structuring, particularly from the ‘buy side’, although experience in relevant industries from the ‘sell side’ will also be considered;
  • Substantial public and private sector experience at manager level – some of which as the top person in an organization or division.
  • A strategic thinker with a demonstrated ability to develop and deliver plans under tight timescales;
  • Strong relationship building skills and an entrepreneurial approach that leverages further opportunities;
  • Proven ability to build networks and establish relationships at different levels in order to work collaboratively with groups, individuals and organizations;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the non-profit arena, international experience and a local, national and global network preferred;
  • A self-starter with proven leadership skills;
  • Passion for and unwavering sense of urgency about global climate change issues and solution sets using global business and finance solutions;
  • Ability to work in a high pressure, entrepreneurial environment with good humor, grace and maturity, while maintaining the highest level of discretion and confidentiality when dealing with staff, donors, and friends of the War Room.

Travel Requirement:

Willingness and availability to travel up to 30% of time, some internationally.
