Assessing the Economic Value of Ecosystem Conservation

Stefano Pagiola, Konrad von Ritter, Joshua Bishop

Assessing the Economic Value of Ecosystem Conservation looks at how valuation should be used to examine four distinct aspects of the value of ecosystems; determining the total flow of benefits from ecosystems, determining the net benefits of interventions that alter ecosystem conditions, examining how the costs and benefits of ecosystems are distributed, and identifying potential financing sources for conservation. The paper also discusses the strengths and limitations of economic valuation, and provides 10 detailed case studies of the application of valuation in different contexts.
